A striking Victorian mourning piece, this memorial lithograph is set in a deep, ornate gilt wood frame with raised scrollwork and textured bands. The black-ground print shows a winged angel holding a banner reading "Gone But Not Forgotten," with floral sprays, roses, and an oval vignette of a figure beside a cross and the words "Rock of Ages Cleft For Me." A printed verse about a loved one called home to shining shore sits along the lower edge.
The central panel is inscribed by hand in ink with the name Thomas Green (partly legible), with a death date of July 4, 1897 and an age of 67 years. The printer's line at the bottom reads "The Brown Pub. Co., Warren, Ohio." Light wear, foxing and a few marks are visible on the print, and the frame shows age-related flaking and a few cracks at the joins, consistent with its age.
A meaningful piece of late nineteenth-century remembrance art, well suited to collectors of Victorian mourning pieces, Americana, or period frames.
