This 19th century shipwright's bevel is stamped T. Andrew , a name visible stamped along the wooden arm. Its long wood blades are joined at a pivot with brass end caps, and the wear on the surfaces shows years of handling in the shop.
Shipwright bevels like this were used to capture and transfer angles on hulls, frames and other curved or irregular work where a square would not do. The adjustable arms still have the aged, dark patina of old timber, and the brass fittings have taken on a soft greenish tone.
A lovely piece for a woodworking or maritime collection, or for anyone who appreciates antique hand tools with honest history. Please note the age and wear visible in the photos.
